Music Therapy
When: Friday afternoons
Music Therapy involbes active participation in improvised music which can enable people to develop their social and communication skills and to express sensitive or painful emotions. It is widely used in this country where there are over 550 practising music therapists.
Who can benefit?
No previous musical experience is requried as variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments are available to play. Music therapy can help people of all ages with difficulties relating to:
- learning and physical disabilities
- mental health problems
- speech and language impairment
- autistic spectrum disorders
- dementia and Alzheimer's disease
- life threatening illness
- grief following bereavement
Aims of Music Therapy:
- to help people express a wide range of emotions through a non-verbal medium
- to improve skills sucha s listening, concentration and memory so that individuals can explore their own musical creativity
- to develop social interaction
- to provide an opportunity to build a shared relationship with the therapist through the music making
- to encourage movement and stimulate activity, building strength and co-ordination
- to work through damaged phases of development using music as a pre-verbal medium
