BACP  (Snr) Accredited Counsellor UKCP Registered Psychotherapist

I began my initial counselling training at St. John University in 1995 gaining a Graduate Diploma in Counselling in 1997. My interest in the possibilities of working across categories of ‘difference’ took me to Regents College where I completed a Cross Cultural Certificate in Psychotherapy. In 2002 I completed a one year supervision course at York St. John and have since worked as a supervisor. Recently I have completed a Masters programme in Existential Psychotherapy at The New School for Psychotherapy and Counselling gaining an MA in Existential Psychotherapy. I am a senior accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and Complaints procedure. I am a UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) Registered Psychotherapist. I am a member of the Society for Existential Analysis (SEA).

I have fourteen years experience of offering counselling to clients in a variety of settings, and have ten years experience of working as a counsellor at York University. I have also acted as a supervisor for the past seven years and run Cross Cultural (Working with Difference) workshops for both Counsellors and staff in a variety of settings.

About my Counselling.....

The frame I use for my counselling is a fluid and collaborative frame. The values underpinning my frame are: respect, competence and emphasis on self-responsibility. To me respect means knowing not to impose my worldview on you, competence means being versatile enough in my knowledge to know what is most helpful and not to insist on a preferred theoretical approach, and self responsibility means being aware how my own beliefs and values are formed so that I don’t unknowingly use them to determine what I regard to be a ‘desirable’ outcome for you.

The aim is to help you gain a greater understanding of yourself and your life. If our initial meeting is at a time of great distress for you, which is often the time when we seek out the presence of a professional counsellor, we will endeavour to understand those events in your life that are most mattering and examine them as closely as possible to your lived and felt experiences so that you can locate the possibilities that are available to you. Uniqueness of your experiences and understanding of your dilemmas is valued over any attempt at labelling or categorization.

Chiselling out the values and beliefs that enable you to live a contented and fulfilled life is an essential part of our work together and I am convinced that such values and beliefs are firmly situated in the context of your uniqueness in terms of your age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, culture, and your dreams and aspirations.

Getting a closer understanding of your beliefs and values can lead you to identify both the possibilities and limitations of your life and to gain the insight and strength required for you to deal with present challenges and future situations with authenticity and courage.

To make an initial appointment...... you can email or telephone me.

Should you be unable to reach me you can leave your contact details on my voicemail and I will get back to you. You can also get in touch by emails. We can then briefly discuss what you want and if you so wished we can arrange to meet for a first session. The first session will give us a chance to see how it feels to work alongside each other and how to proceed. Once we have agreed to work together we can decide the number of sessions and the pattern of reviews to make sure our meeting continue to meet your needs.

Fees....

Individual therapy costs £40 per session payable in cash or cheque at the end of each session. I will provide you with a receipt.
